DARK WITH EXCESSIVE BRIGHT

The BIS label is releasing DARK WITH EXCESSIVE BRIGHT, an album of orchestral music by Missy Mazzoli, featuring several works in their recorded premieres, and bringing together an impressive group of musicians, many of them regular collaborators of the noted American composer, including players from the Arctic Philharmonic, Oganes Girunyan violin; Øyvind Mehus, violin; Natalya Girunyan, viola; Mary Auner, cello; and Ingvild Maria Mehus, double bass, led by Tim Weiss, conductor.

James Gaffigan leads the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra with Peter Herrestal as the violin soloist in Mazzoli’s Dark with Excessive Bright, a 2021 sweeping tour de force in concerto form for solo violin and string orchestra.

The 2013 Sinfonia (for Orbiting Spheres), and the 2006 These Worlds in Us are followed by the 2021 three-part Orpheus Undone, all three works evidencing the breadth and depth and growth of the skills of the protean Missy Mazzoli.

With support from Norway’s Grieg Foundation, the takes-a-village creative team of the excellently produced, annotated, and engineered recording includes Gunnar Herleif Nilsen, Jørn Pedersen, Hans Kipfer, Selim M’rad, Robert Suff, Garth Greenwell, Anna Lamberti, and Arlette Lemieux-Chené.

With this ambitious project BIS continues enriching the recorded repertory with significant new works by composers of all nationalities.
