Naxos is releasing a recording of a 2021 performance of Gioachino Rossini’s La scala di seta in a 2-disc package (Naxos 8.660512-13)
The cast features sopranos Claudia Urru, Meagan Sill, tenors Michele Angelini and Remy Burnens, baritone Emmanuel Franco and bass Eugenio Di Lieto, with José Miguel Pérez-Sierra conducting the Cracow Philharmonic Orchestra.
Rossini was in his early 20’s when in 1812 he penned a handful of one-act miniatures among them La scala di seta.
The silly plot involves an old guardian – Dormont – in charge of Giulia, determined that she will marry Blansac. Unfortunately for him Giulia is already married to Dorvil, who every night climbs up to Giulia’s bedroom when a ladder made of silk is lowered by her from her window. There is general surprise when Dorvil is followed in his nightly climb by Blansac, who loves Giulia’s cousin, Lucilla. Realizing what has gone on Dormont forgives everybody. Segue to happy finale.
In the cast, tenore di grazia Michele Angelini displays Rossinian agility and stratospheric high notes. The ladies are charming, the lower male voices ok.
